Skin brushing is a cleansing technique that improves your blood circulation, enhances elimination of toxins, and supports your lymphatic system. This enables your body to expel the toxic byproducts of Candida more quickly.
The great thing about skin brushing is that its a simple, easy to understand way to enhance the detoxification process. You can easily fit it into your daily routine before showering or bathing.
Skin brushing can improve your health in a number of ways. When it comes to detox routines, your skin has historically been an overlooked contributor to your wellbeing. Why is it so important? For a start, your skin is actually the largest organ in your body. And most importantly for Candida sufferers, it is responsible for up to 15% of toxin elimination from your body. So if you want to reduce the symptoms of your Candida overgrowth, or help with Die Off, make sure you don’t neglect your skin.
Skin brushing removes the top layer of dead skin cells and encourages new skin cells to grow. Your skin is responsible for up to 15% of toxin elimination from your body. By unclogging your pores you can actually increase the efficiency of this process and allow more toxins to leave your body.
Blood and lymph circulation
Stimulating your lymphatic system is perhaps the most important role of skin brushing. The lymphatic system is a crucial part of your immune system, by acting as a filtration system that prevents pathogens from entering your blood stream. Brushing will also improve your blood circulation, which enables your liver to remove the toxic byproducts of Candida more quickly. As a reminder, the Candida yeast produces a total of 79 different toxins, including ethanol and acetaldehyde, so your liver needs all the help it can get!
Yes I know this isn’t strictly Candida-related, but this last point definitely deserves a mention! Many naturopaths recommend skin brushing to treat cellulite. The improvements in blood and lymph circulation, combined with the elimination of toxins under the skin, have been found to help remove at least some of those nasty dimples.
How to do Skin Brushing
There is a very specific way to do skin brushing, and you should follow this method if you want to get the most from your treatment.
- Begin your skin brushing before you shower or bathe, and be sure to use a dry brush.
- Start on the soles of your feet, using small circular motions.
- Move to your legs, using long strokes. Always brush towards your chest, following the flow of lymphatic fluid.
- Go counter clockwise on your stomach and abdomen.
- When you move to your arms, start at the finger tips and brush towards your body. Use small, circular strokes in your armpits.
- Lastly, brush your shoulders and upper chest, always down towards your heart.
- Take a shower (a contrast shower would be good) and dry yourself thoroughly.
If you have any areas of broken skin or infection, avoid these during the skin brushing process. If you would like to use oils on your skin after your shower, use coconut oil as this is a good antifungal to supplement your treatment.
Choosing a Skin Brush
Choosing the right brush can make a big difference in both your comfort and the effectiveness of the skin brushing treatment. The brush should have natural bristles – synthetic bristles are more likely to scratch and probably contain toxic chemicals. The bristles should also be reasonably stiff. Firmer bristles will have a greater effect on your circulation.
Wash your brush with soap and water every couple of weeks, to remove some of the dead skin cells that have accumulated. Each brush should last a few months before you feel the need to replace it.
Where did Skin Brushing originate?
Skin brushing appears in a wide variety of historical contexts. Athletes in ancient Greece used skin scrapers to improve their circulation and remove sweat from their bodies after contests, while for centuries the Japanese used skin brushing to prepare themselves for traditional hot baths.
Skin brushing was even cited as a technique used by several 19th century centenarians in “The Possibility of Living 200 Years”, written by F.O. Havens in 1896. More recently, naturopaths have come to realize the value of this important technique. After all, the skin is the largest organ in our bodies, and responsible for up to 15% of toxin elimination.
