Choosing a Skin Brush

Choosing the right brush can make a big difference in both your comfort and the effectiveness of the skin brushing treatment. The brush should have natural bristles - synthetic bristles are more likely to scratch and probably contain toxic chemicals. The bristles should also be reasonably stiff. Firmer bristles will have a greater effect on your circulation.

Wash your brush with soap and water every couple of weeks, to remove some of the dead skin cells that have accumulated. Each brush should last a few months before you feel the need to replace it.

Skin brushing appears in a wide variety of historical contexts. Athletes in ancient Greece used skin scrapers to improve their circulation and remove sweat from their bodies after contests, while for centuries the Japanese used skin brushing to prepare themselves for traditional hot baths.

Skin brushing was even cited as a technique used by several 19th century centenarians in “The Possibility of Living 200 Years”, written by F.O. Havens in 1896.
