I have just received this kind and helpful email from the laboratory where I was going to get tested for SIBO:

“My colleague has explained that our breath test for SIBO is prohibitively expensive for you and she asked me if there’s anything else we can do to help.

One thing you could try is to fast overnight (nothing to eat or drink except water), then take about 10G (15ml) of lactulose solution which is available from any pharmacy, and see if you have any intestinal symptoms after 1-2 hours. Lactulose is a non-absorbable carbohydrate and if you have small intestinal bacterial overgrowth then bacteria will act on the lactulose and produce bloating and possibly some abdominal discomfort between 60-120 minutes after you consume it.

If you have no symptoms then that doesn’t exclude SIBO, but if you do experience any symptoms before 2 hours then that strongly suggests SIBO.”

    I hope it helps…

Thank you Wiley, I will get it (I had previously thought that it must be unreliable in some way because of the Able/Raster posts)

Rodi I am glad you are finding out more, but I am sorry that I can’t give you any advice…I need to test for H pylori too, but my GP has refused so far and i am paying far too much for a SIBO test soon, and can’t afford another private test atm. so it will have to wait.

Nia, I am booked for a SIBO test in a couple of week’s time, and i don’t want to take any antibiotics either, so I am hoping against hope that I don’t get a positive result, if I do I will be asking for your advice!

thank you again, but i am on the diet so I have never stopped eating coconut oil, rutabaga, onions etc. This all started on the 19th JUNE, just after I started taking milk thistle, for which I think I have an intolerance /allergy, I will let you know tomorrow ….

doublek thank you very much for replying.

I stopped taking the oregano oil, 2 days ago, but still feel dreadful, so do you think i should just resume taking it and put up with the symptoms, or wait a few days to a week and only start taking it again when I am feeling a lot better?

i don’t understand,if you have got candida, from my researches, ( although I am a relative newcomer to trying to get rid of candida) you won’t get rid of it whilst you are eating sugar (fruit)…. so what are you trying to achieve?

I think that it could be die off, I developed ringworm on my hand, which is still there,as a die off symptom about 6 weeks into the diet…

or the symptoms could be down to gluten, dairy and sugar withdrawal… you are definitely going too fast, if I were you, I might go back on the gluten and dairy, and concentrate on coming off the sugar before I attempt to deal with the candida… and then come off the dairy and or gluten, until I was feeling ok, and then I would just stay on the candida diet for about 6 weeks before I added any anti fungals

i am sorry, I don’t have a vaginal infection, but I do have fungal infections on my toenails, and they have not improved, in fact they have spread slightly, and I have not only been doing the diet for 2 months, but have also been taking anti fungals for the last 45 days, I am hoping that it is die off!
