I need feedback about my difficult situation and have been struggling with candida issues for approx 6 years with severe overgrowth when I was on medications to treat inflammatory arthritis including prednisone, and Humira (immune suppressor). I became extremely ill but all conventional tests came back as “normal”. I was extremely short of breathe, coughing up a lot of thick phlegm. I did research into what this could be and found info on candida and it matched the symptoms I was having including my reactions to ingesting sugar and vinegar. My doc at the time insisted that I was “fine” and in good health but I insisted that he run a sputum culture but also test this for fungal infection. My test came back positive for Candida Albicans. My doctor insisted that this was normal and stated that the candida was probably from my esophagus. I brought in a sputum sample to show my doctor and he was more cooperative and ran another sputum culture to test for C. albicans again. Needless to say, the test came back positive again and he was dumbfounded and not sure how to treat this because he has never seen anything like it. I did extensive research into how to treat candida including prescription anti-fungals. He refused to prescribe me these and referred me to an infectious disease doctor who was condescending and he concluded that I was fine despite the fact that I had severe edema, severe foot fungus, etc. Moreover, I was referred to a pulmonologist b/c I had an “abnormal chest x-ray” with infiltrates, and was also referred to several other specialists and they all concluded that I was “fine”. Out of frustration, I swore off conventional medicine and implemented the candida diet and lost 30 lbs of water weight in two weeks. I coughed up less phlegm and I looked like a different person. My doctor was dumbfounded when he saw me and asked what had changed. I told him about the diet and he still refused that it was due to candida!!! Who normally loses 30 lbs in two weeks? I explained to him that the diet helped a lot but I still had severe symptoms including some shortness of breath and mucus (less than before), burning from head to toe and extreme fatigue.
I switched doctors soon after in hopes that a new one would listen. No luck. A while after transitioning docs, I brought in copies of the old sputum culture results and explained my hx to my new doc. She filed a copy of my documents for my chart but did not seem concerned. I continued to advocate for myself and asked to be prescribed an anti-fungal. She stated that she would not prescribe me these meds. She had attempted to pawn me off on specialists and I refused because I have done this in the past with no help. Moreover, she referred me for a sputum culture and refused to test for candida.
In conclusion, I am still following the diet, with no further improvement. I know that my infection is severe (as a result of the humira)and is a resistant strain to natural treatments. If I am strict with the diet I end up burning from head to toe (up to 2 months) until I give in and eat sugar. This helps for a few minutes then I have a backlash of overgrowth symptoms i.e. tightness, sinus congestion, worse shortness of breath, itching etc. I have tried natural treatments such as Pau D’Arco, garlic, diluted food grade H202, Oil of oregano, S. Bouardii and many Garden of Life products etc, etc with very little improvement since.
I have done extensive research and the protocol for current and former Humira patients at risk of a suspected candida or fungal infection should be given oral anti-fungals to prevent disseminated disease. Moreover, if they test positive for fungus in any way (sputum, or blood) they should be treated with IV anti-fungals. I know that the only reason I am still alive is because of doing everything I’ve done so far. I am certain that I have been under-treated and ignored by docs and I don’t know what to do. I have done everything in my power to advocate and I don’t have any idea what to do next. I can’t work in this condition and have missed a lot of work etc. I am a dad and a husband but have been unable to function as either because of this. Please any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.June 1, 2013 at 7:48 pm #105484

In my opinion it seems like you are only going the western medicine route for treating this, when western doctors have very little experience generally treating gut flora disorders. There are very few drugs designed and marketed to treat candida and the doctors don’t really make money off this when compared to other illnesses. This is why you are having trouble.
One of the problems with prescription antifungals from me and my naturopath’s standpoint is that it causes the candida to go deeper in the body. What happens if you walk by my house everyday and I run out and punch you? You will eventually go down a different street…this is what the candida does when treated with prescription antifungals, it goes elsewhere in the body and deeper.
I also think you are failing to look into the causes of this illness other than the medication you took. Do you have amalgam fillings? Have you ever taken antibiotics? Vaccines? All of these can cause/influence gut flora disorders and affect the body long term.
It sounds like the diet works for you which is great. If you want to save a bunch of money, time, and effort, I know a naturopath here in oregon that can treat you remotely and he has helped a few forum members as well. He uses homeopathics, vitamins, and minerals to help you get better. Each of us have our own symptoms so your treatment for candida should be different than other people’s.
Additionally, if you are thinking that a magic pill will heal you or IV, I think this is the wrong mindset to have. Think more long term than this; it takes a lot of time to heal the gut and reverse years of living unhealthy. You don’t want to “nuke” the candida but instead change the environment internally within the gut for it to live.
If you are eating items such as rice, potatoes, carrots, fruit, nuts, etc. all of these can set back your progress. We developed a forum diet that is a great way to go when starting out. Email able900 if you are interested.
You also haven’t tried SF722 undecenoic acid which is a great long term and safe antifungal for treating candida. This is a product I recommend over and over on the forum but it won’t cure your overgrowth by itself.
