Soooo I don’t really know where to start. I was on the strict diet for 6 weeks before I started to feel insanely sick. I had been eating only veggies, eggs, approved meats, hummus (which doesn’t give me any side effects), and had added back in a few things like stevia, plain yogurt, and oat bran. I had also been taking coconut oil, garlic, molybdenum, spirulina, vitamin C, and milk thistle along with 3 different strains of probiotics (I separated the times for the anti-fungals and probiotics as well). At week 6 I started with stomach pains, vomiting, diarrhea, feelings of fullness, etc. It honestly never even crossed my mind that it was die off related because I thought I had experienced die off a few weeks earlier when I’d had really bad stomach pains and headaches… Anyway, I went to the doctor, explained the diet and my symptoms. He said he didn’t think the diet was causing my illness, but that i really needed to get electrolytes into my body. I didn’t want to add sugar into my diet since I had been on the strict diet and doing so well, but I felt like hell and didn’t know what else to do…so I decided to add sugar back into my diet.
Anyhoo I’ve now been following all the other parts of the diet except for adding sugar back in. That being said, I’ve still been very careful about how much I intake – I only eat fruits that are very low in sugar (mostly just berries), any yogurts I eat I pick the lowest ones, and when choosing other foods I am cognizant about the levels of sugar and the amount I eat, as well as read the label to look at what kinds of sugars are ingredients. Now, all that being said, PLEASE don’t judge me or scold me/yell at me/etc. – I am WELL aware that I need to cut out sugar again, it’s just that, unfortunately, feeling this sick, I literally can’t even look at a piece of lettuce or broccoli or celery. I know the sugar has got to go and it is most likely causing a lot of this…but the fact is also that I felt super sick BEFORE adding the sugar, too.
Now, over the past 3 weeks (since adding sugar back), I have had intolerable headaches, neck pains, severe stomach cramps and nausea, feelings of fullness, fatigue. I have stayed home sick/worked from home roughly 1 1/2 weeks of the past 3 weeks of work, and I am literally going out of my mind. I went back to the doctor and got a general check up and all my blood work came back normal… in fact, in better health than normal. so what does it all mean?! I was told my cholesterol is amazing, all my organs are working properly, no signs of disease, all blood counts are normal…
After hearing all that from my doctor, I am back to assuming that all of my symptoms are die off related. Thoughts?
So I guess my overall questions, knowing full well that I need to cut out sugar again ASAP are…
– are all of these symptoms die off related?
– how can I curb my symptoms since they are VERY clearly affecting my everyday life? Medicines, specific foods that will help, specific probiotics/anti-fungals?
– has anyone experienced similar issues and how did you deal with them?
– where do I go from here?
Thank you to anyone who reads this – I could really really really use the advice.August 5, 2013 at 4:27 pm #108671

I think most of your symptoms are die-off related and to reduce them you need to go slower and not be so aggressive in your treatment. I tell most forum members to plan on a 6-18 month recovery and this isn’t a sprint, but more of a marathon.
If you ever start to feel really crummy, the simplest thing you can do to feel better is to stop taking antifungals. Additionally, sometimes cheat items can reduce die-off such as rice, etc. (items that are slightly bad).
Additionally, spirulina is something that most forum members do not consume and this could be causing problems such as diarrhea, etc. I had an odwolla (mispell) superfood drink a few months ago and it gave me the runs for a few days. Take a break from the spirulina and then start it again when you feel better. If you feel bad again then you know what is causing the problems.
What billion count total per day are you consuming for probiotics per day? You could be taking too much or the wrong strain and this could affect your body negatively. HMF neuro/forte in comparison, could be much more gentle on the body.
There is a chance you have something that is similar to candida but not candida such as h.pylori, SIBO (small intestinal bacterial growth), parasites, strept., etc. There are a lot of things that have similar symptoms and so this protocol might benefit a different bacterial strain if you have SIBO or h.pylori, etc. For instance, the spirulina could be feeding the bad bacteria and then you are killing it with antifungals, and this would likely make you feel bad. Without proper testing you are sort of doing a crapshoot on solving your general health problems.
At the minimum it sounds like you have a inflammation problem and you need to reduce the inflammation. Taking anti-inflammatory supplements such as fermented cod liver oil or anti-inflammatory foods such as salmon, broccoli, spinach, pumpkin, etc. could reduce the headaches, stomach discomfort, etc.
