I am so glad I found your post because I have exactly the same problem. For the last 4 years, every year I had UTI at least once. The strange thing is that I almost never had any symptoms, no cloudy/foul/foamy urine, no burning sensation, no strong urges to go to the bathroom. The only thing I had was going to the bathroom a lot, but I was trying to drink 3 liter of water per day (to get better skin, I hoped). What sent me to the GP was acute pain on the low back one day when I was at school. The GP only gave me nitrofurantoine. 2 days later I had high fever and felt extremely cold but then it all went away. I was fine for about a year and a half.
Then I gradually felt pain on the low back. At first I thought it was just because I had to sit at a computer a lot to study, until one night the pain was unbearable. My new GP did the urine test (dip test and also culture lab test), found out that I had UTI and then prescribed antibiotics. After finishing the antibiotics I came back for another urine test and it came out positive. That was repeated 3 times, every time I came back with a positive result, they prescribed more antibiotics. The result was that eventually the bacteria were resistant to amoxicilin. Then they said they were reluctant to give me more medicine and told me just to not do anything and wait to see if “Nature works it out”. My back pain didnt stop, especially when I was cold and it was in winter. So I went to the Chinese Medical Center and they prescribed me some herbal remedy. I made the concoctions and drank for 2 weeks without feeling any different. So 2 weeks later I asked to see a urologist. Upon hearing my complaint, the urologist immediately prescribed 10 days of high does ciprofloxacine followed by 3 months of low-dose (50mg) nitrofurantoine. The crazy thing was that they also took my urine sample on the day. I had came home, took the ciprofloxacine for about a week when they called and said that the urine test was negative, I was clear of bacteria. However, they emphasized that I had to continue with the 3 months of nitrofurantoine anyway. I had been taking it for about 2 weeks when I notice that the inner lips of the vulva have swollen up and I had some very light yellow vaginal discharge that did not look like cottage-cheese but had a slightly bad smell. I went back to my GP (In the Netherlands, it is impossible to see a specialist without a referral from your GP). She did not examine my vagina but only heard my descriptions and concluded that I had candida due to the use of antibiotics. She called my urologist and unfortunately, they both agreed that I had to continue with the antibiotics while also using some antifungal cream and pill. Of course the swelling did not disappear, but I saw no more vagina discharge. I have also been noticing new symptoms such as itchiness here and there, insomnia, and fatigue. So I went back to the Chinese doctor. She prescribed me with herbs that both fortify my kidney function and strengthen qi (blood) and she said it should help with the candida too. She also told me to strictly stay away from sugar and spicy food. I’m currently taking these herbs but there’s still a few more weeks to go.
I have also been reading several pages and threads on this website and been thinking about embarking on a detox cleanse and candida treatment. I read on the front page that I first should stop with the antibiotics. However, I am not so sure about doing that as I had asked my GP and urologist a few times if I could and they both said no. Even the Chinese doctor said I should just continue while taking the herbs. But, every night before going to bed, I take this evil lil antibiotics pill with great anxiety. I fear that another 2 months of antibiotics would lead my candida condition to the worst possible and then I would have to go on a much longer treatment against candida. I am not afraid of adhering to the strict diet but I am underweight and I have to study a lot, I am afraid that I would not be physically able to keep it up. (I just started with drinking only lemon water, eating steamed veggies and sunflower seeds, and already felt a little bit tired and dizzy.) Shall I just do it all? Take the antibiotics, the Chinese herbs, do the detox cleans and go on a Candida diet (including the use of probiotics) at the same time or shall I just wait until I am done with the antibiotics and the Chinese herbs? Does anyone have experience with treating candida while being on antibiotics that can give some pointers? I would be extremely grateful. Thank you so much in advance!
