Very good observation, candida_sucks!
me2kib, I totally agree with candida_sucks that you should mention the fact that you visited Thailand, and you could bring up the meningitis. Be sure to find a compentent doctor. I do not know the situation in the USA, but in my country there are doctors who are specialized in (imported) tropical diseases that most ordinary doctors would not recognize because they occur so rarely in moderate climates. If there’s an equivalent of a tropic-disease doctor in the USA, I strongly advise you to consult such a doctor.
In addition, next time you travel to Thailand (or to any other tropical country for that matter), be sure to check the advice for vaccinations. I always do, and your story just reminds me of the importance. I usually do not take all vaccinations, I select only those that apply to me. For example, I need no vaccination against diseases that are only transmitted sexually. Same for vaccinations against diseases that are transmitted by certain bats that do not live in the provinces that I’ll be visiting.
Before travelling, consider the official advice, then consider your personal circumstances and your risk tolerance, and use that to decide which vaccinations to take, and which not to take.
