It’s new to me that amalgam is used when building up a crown. I have some crowned teeth (molars), and no amalgam was during the process.
Painfulness may of course be a good reason to remove things, though personally I’d prefer to investigate the cause of the pain first. But maybe it’s simply due to a bad treatment by your previous dentist.
About the bones: I specifically chose an implant because that puts pressure on the jawbone while chewing. I have a bridge covering one tooth, and the jawbone under that missing tooth never receives any pressure from chewing. The result is that the jawbone is very narrow there. That’s not too much of a problem because that location is normally hardly visible, but sometimes some food gets stuck in that “shrunk jawbone pocket”, and I have to get it out with a finger or by some other means.
I much prefer the implant I have for a different tooth. I can chew normally, and the pressure stimulates the jawbone to maintain its original shape, strength, and thickness.
