Grains are the cheapest and most reliable way to make kefir. Getting some from eBay would cost a fraction of a starter kit and they’ll never run out. When they grow you can eat the surplus too for a concentrated source of probiotics. This isn’t something you want to miss out on. You don’t need to worry about sugar either because you can extend the initial fermentation or the “ripening” as long as you feel necessary. It’s never going to have as much as commercial ones. Remember milk is only about 5% sugar, so anything with 4g per 100ml clearly hasn’t been well fermented.
