A remarkable therapy that originates in Ayurvedic literature, oil pulling is an excellent complement to your Candida treatment. It is an extremely simple and affordable treatment that everyone can try.
You simply swish some oil round in your mouth for a certain amount of time, then spit it out. Practitioners have also noted numerous other health benefits, such as improvements in skin complaints and reduced migraines.
Oil pulling helps with Candida in two specific ways. First, it eliminates the yeast from oral thrush. Second, it helps expel the toxins that result from Candida Die-Off.
It is safe to employ oil pulling at any stage during your Candida treatment, and indeed many naturopaths would recommend that you make it part of your daily routine.
Oil pulling can help with oral thrush
One of the symptoms of a systematic Candida infection is oral thrush. This is frequently seen in Candida sufferers and those who have recently taken antibiotics. You can recognize it very simply – the giveaway is a thick white coating on the tongue. If you’re undergoing treatment for Candida overgrowth in your gut, don’t forget that your mouth is another favorite breeding area.
So how does oil pulling help with oral thrush? Well, it helps in two ways.
- As you swish the oil around in your mouth, it collects and traps pathogens
- If you use extra virgin coconut oil (as we recommend), its antifungal properties will actually kill the yeast in your mouth. Coconut oil contains caprylic acid, a natural but powerful antifungal.
Oil pulling can remove the toxins from Candida Die-Off
Candida Die-Off is what happens when you start killing off your Candida overgrowth. This is the hardest part of your treatment, indeed its the time when many people give up. So its important to give yourself every chance to make it through Die-Off and continue your treatment.
Oil pulling gets its name because it literally pulls the toxins, bacteria, and other pathogens from your system. If you are undergoing Candida Die-Off, you may be experiencing breakouts, headaches, brain fog. These are due to the byproducts of the Herxheimer reaction (or when the yeast cells are rapidly killed). Oil pulling can help remove at least some of these toxins from your body.
How do you do Oil Pulling?
Oil pulling is a very simple process, but there are a few easy rules that you need to follow.
After brushing your teeth in the morning, put one tablespoon of extra virgin coconut oil in your mouth. Now swish it around, just like mouthwash. Be sure to push the oil all around your mouth, – between your teeth, under the tongue, across the roof of your mouth. Do this for 15 minutes if you can, after which the oil should have thinned and turned a milky color. Now spit it out and rinse out your mouth with salt water.
Now here are a few things you need to remember:
- Do oil pulling on an empty stomach.
- Don’t swallow the oil! By the time you finish swishing, its full of pathogens and toxins. Remember to spit it out.
- Don’t gargle with the oil.
Which oil should you use for oil pulling?
The traditional oils used in oil pulling are sesame oil and sunflower oil. These have been found to be the most effective in treating illness, and sesame oil is actually the oil recommended in the original Ayurvedic literature.
You’re treating a Candida overgrowth though, so you need something more appropriate for this specific infection. We recommend extra virgin coconut oil, which has a great consistency for oil pulling. More importantly though, it contains caprylic acid, which is a powerful, natural antifungal. You can find good coconut oil online or in your supermarket. We definitely recommend that you buy the organic version if you can.
Where does Oil Pulling come from?
Oil pulling was featured in early Ayurvedic medicine, and was first mentioned in the Charaka Samhita (the oldest of the three ancient Ayurvedic treatises). Believe it or not, this dates back to around 300 B.C.!
The treatment re-emerged in the 1990s thanks to a Russian doctor named Dr Karach, who claimed that oil pulling could help with this extensive list of complaints – “headaches, bronchitis, tooth pain, thrombosis, eczema, ulcers and diseases of stomach, intestines, heart, blood, kidney, liver, lungs and women’s diseases. “
Additionally, Dr Karach claimed that, “It heals diseases of nerves, paralysis, and encephalitis. It prevents the growth of malignant tumors, cuts and heals them. Chronic sleeplessness is cured”.
No one has found a good scientific explanation for why oil pulling works, but there are thousands of testimonials to suggest that it does. Oil pulling is a simple and effective complement to your other Candida treatments.
